Ziro Valley spreads its flat green floor at 1,500 m between pine ridges in Lower Subansiri district, 130 km from Itanagar — the ancestral homeland of the Apatani people, whose paddy fields, fish-filled streams and villages grid the landscape, with the Talley Valley wildlife sanctuary above the rim.
History & culture
The Apatani have farmed this valley for centuries with an ingenious system — terraced rice, streams percolated through the fields to carry fish, and the historic practice of face tattoos and nose plugs among their women that outsiders photographed into worldwide fame; the valley now guards that identity alongside a modern annual music festival that fills its meadows each September.
