Zemithang is the frontier valley north of Tawang, 55 km of climbing road past the monastery town — a wide river-flat valley of the Nyamjang Chu, fields and yak pastures under the great eastern ridge that separates India from the Tibetan plateau, permitted frontier country at the valley's end.
History & culture
The valley's Tibetan-border culture — prayer wheels, chortens and a historic monastery — runs long and undisturbed; the region's soldiers of 1962 have their memorials on the approach, and the modern valley balances the district's grazing and apple life against the watchful quiet of its frontier position.
