Vikramshila's ruins lie at Antichak on the Ganga's northern bank in Bhagalpur district, near Kahalgaon — the excavated mound of a great 8th-century university, its stupa and monastery court walls running brick-red across the riverine plain.
History & culture
Founded by the Pala king Dharmapala around the 8th-9th century, Vikramshila was among India's great Buddhist universities — its scholar-monks debated as far as Tibet (whose masters drew directly on its texts); the great central stupa and the symmetrical monastery complex were uncovered by excavations from the 1960s, revealing the campus of the eastern Gangetic age.
