Vijayapura (Bijapur), in the flat black-soil country of north Karnataka, spreads around its great dome — a Deccan plateau town of palaces, tombs and the imposing Gol Gumbaz, on the old Mughal–Adil Shahi corridor 525 km from Bengaluru.
History & culture
Capital of the Adil Shahi sultanate (1489–1686), Vijayapura gathered the greatest dome of the resurgent world after Hagia Sophia: the Gol Gumbaz (1656), whose whispering gallery carries a whisper across 37 metres, sheltering the tomb of Muhammad Adil Shah. Around it stand the Ibrahim Rauza (the 'Black Taj'), the Jami Masjid's arcades, the Asar Mahal and the Upli Buruj watchtower — a full Deccan dynasty in stone.
