Geography & terrain

Vaishali lies on the Bihar plain 55 km north of Patna, near the Gandak's old channel — the ruined capital of the ancient Licchavi republic, whose excavated pillars, stupas and tank embankments spread across the green farmland of the same name.

History & culture

One of the world's first republics and anointed by the Buddha with his last teaching — the Mahaparinirvana sutra set here; the Licchavi assembly house, the Ashokan lion pillar and the relic stupa of the Buddha's body-ashes mark its sanctity, with the great brick stupa of the 3rd-century BCE still standing to the relic rite.
