Umrangso sits in the green hills of Dima Hasao district, 300 km from Guwahati on the NH-6 tea-and-hill road toward Shillong's country — a town of coal country and a reservoir lake, its water set into forested hills with the district's southern ridges closing the skyline.
History & culture
The town grew on the district's mineral and hydropower history — the Kopili hydro station and the area's coal economy built Umrangso as an industrial-comfort town; the artificial lake created by the station's works became the accidental centrepiece, turning a power-town into the district's picnic and lake retreat.
