Geography & terrain

Udaipur is built around Lake Pichola at 598 m, ringed by the Aravalli hills. The city's white marble palaces and lakesides — Pichola, Fateh Sagar and the newer Udai Sagar — give it the 'Venice of the East' nickname; the famous City Palace line runs along Pichola's east shore.

History & culture

Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, Udaipur was the last redoubt of the Mewar dynasty — the one Rajput house that never surrendered to the Mughals. The City Palace's 11 palaces, the lake island Jag Mandir, and the Saheliyon-ki-Bari gardens all tell that 400-year story.
