Geography & terrain

Tawang sits at ~3,000 m in the eastern Himalaya of Arunachal Pradesh, a high valley town under the Indo-Tibetan border — the land of the Monpa people, with the Tawang Chu river and the snow ridge of the Eastern Himalaya around it.

History & culture

Tawang is the site of the 1680 Galden Namgyal Lhatse monastery — the world's largest Buddhist monastery — built by the Gelugpa school under Tibetan patronage. It was also a key point in the 1962 war, with the Memorial at the old battle sites.
