The Tamhini Ghat is a 20 km section of road climbing the Western Ghats escarpment near Mulshi, in one of the heaviest-rainfall zones of the Sahyadri — over 5,000 mm of monsoon rain a year, funnelled by the escarpment's orientation into a narrow corridor of clouds and water. The basalt cliffs, layered by the ancient Deccan Traps eruptions, shed the rain in hundreds of seasonal waterfalls that pour across the road between June and October, and the ghat's streams feed the Mulshi reservoir, one of the region's largest water bodies. The surrounding evergreen and semi-evergreen forest supports hornbills, giant squirrels and a rich amphibian community, and the combination of steep relief, heavy rain and forest makes this one of the most biologically rich ghat sections in Maharashtra.
History & culture
Tamhini Ghat's history is one of road and rain: the ghat road, completed in the 20th century to link the Konkan coast with the Deccan plateau, cut through one of the wettest sections of the Sahyadri, and the Mulshi dam project of the 1920s, among the first major hydroelectric schemes in western India, created the reservoir that now anchors the landscape at the ghat's end. The region's older history includes the forts and passes of the Sahyadri's monsoon country, used by Maratha armies crossing between coast and plateau, and the villages along the route retain a farming life tied to the monsoon's rhythm. Today the ghat's fame is entirely natural — one of the finest seasonal waterfall drives in the Western Ghats.

The Tamhini ghat road in full monsoon is an assault of beauty: the car winds between cliffs streaming with water, waterfalls crossing the road in silver sheets, the spray cooling the cabin even with windows shut.
