Srikalahasti sits on the Swarnamukhi river, 36 km east of Tirupati — a temple town of the southern plains whose skyline is ruled by the 120-ft gopuram of the Kalahasteeswara temple, one of the Pancha Bhoota shrines dedicated to Vayu (air), with the river and palm flats wrapping the old streets.
History & culture
The temple's stone and epigraphs run from Pallava to Chola hands across the 5th–12th centuries; its scripture tells of Kalahasti the spider, the serpent and the elephant whose devotion built the worship — and the town later became the kalamkari capital, its hand-painted cloth now an acclaimed artisanal export.
