The raft launch is a shove into cold, moving water, and the first rapid announces itself with a roar around the bend — the world turns to spray and shouts and the raft flexing under you, and then you are through, laughing, the gorge walls echoing. Between rapids the river goes calm and green, cliffs and forest sliding past, the occasional monkey or kingfisher watching the fleet go by. The cliff jump is the day's test: standing on the warm rock, the river far below, everyone's voice saying just go — and the cold shock of entry that turns instantly to exhilaration. By evening, the campfire, the dal-chawal, the rafting stories, and the aarti's flames drifting down the river make a complete circle: adventure and devotion on the same water.
