History & culture
Sher Shah, the Suri emperor who ruled Delhi and the roads of the north in the 1540s, was born here and buried in the sandstone tomb that bears his name — an octagonal monument islanded in its tank, completed 1545; the town surrounding it kept its medieval-grid character through the colonial and modern centuries.
