Geography & terrain

Sangachoeling lies in the Pelling district of Sikkim at about 1,200 m, 20 km from Pelling and 110 km from Gangtok — the monastery hill of the region, its 1697 gompa, the prayer halls and the views set on the Singalila's southern ridge.

History & culture

The monastery's story runs with the 1697 founding era — the monastery of the 1697 founding (the Sikkim's oldest) and the Nyingma seat of the Pemayangtse sister, with the monastery's modern role as the heritage stop of the Pelling circuit and the home of the 1697-era halls and the monk school and the annual dances; the monastery's history of the 1968-era restoration and the prayer wheels and the valley views, gives Sangachoeling its monastery character.
