History & culture
The site's story runs with the 3rd-century-BC Ashoka era — the stupa town of the 3rd-century-BC great stupa and the 1st-century-BC gateways of the Shunga era, with the site's modern role as the heritage stop of the Bhopal circuit and the home of the 1989 UNESCO listing and the Ashoka pillar and the 1919-era museum; the site's history of the 12th-century decline and the 1912 restoration and the 40 stupas, gives Sanchi its stupa character.
