Sabarimala lies in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala at about 1,260 m, 100 km from Kottayam and 180 km from Kochi — the pilgrimage hill of the region, its Ayyappa temple, the 18-km trek and the festival set on the Periyar tiger reserve's edge.

History & culture

The temple's story runs with the 12th-century pilgrimage era — the hill temple of the Ayyappa and the 12th-century-era shrine of the Sabari legend, with the temple's modern role as the pilgrimage of the Kerala circuit and the home of the 18-km Pamba trek and the Makaravilakku festival and the 12th-century-era sanctum; the temple's history of the 2018 reforms and the 41-day vratham and the Mandala season, gives Sabarimala its pilgrimage character.
