Ratnagiri smells of the sea and mangoes in season: the orchards run down to the coast, and in summer the fruit markets are stacked with golden Alphonsos that taste like the place they grew. The Thibaw Palace is an eerie, grand house — a slice of Burmese royalty stranded on a Konkan hill, its rooms quiet and its views sweeping the coast. At Ganpatipule, the beach meets the temple steps, and the Ganesh idol looks out over the surf as it has for centuries. The fort at Jaigad watches the river mouth, and the fishing harbour is loud and busy at dawn. It's a coast of deep, provincial character — a place with an unexpected royal story, an ocean and a fruit, and nothing to prove.
