Ratangad lies in the Raigad district of Maharashtra at about 1,297 m, 140 km from Mumbai and 30 km from Junnar — the trek fort of the region, its 17th-century walls, the Neelkanth rock arch and the caves set on the Sahyadri's ridge.

The fort's story runs with the 17th-century Maratha era — the trek fort of the 17th-century-era walls and the Neelkanth rock arch of the ancient formation, with the fort's modern role as the trek stop of the Junnar circuit and the home of the Neelkanth arch and the 17th-century-era bastions and the Ratanwadi village; the fort's history of the 1656-era watch and the monsoon greenery and the Amrutanand caves, gives Ratangad its trek-fort character.
