The stepwell's story runs with the 11th-century Solanki era — the stepwell of the 1063 founding (the Rani Udayamati's well) and the 7 storeys of the Maru-Gurjara art, with the stepwell's modern role as the heritage stop of the Patan circuit and the home of the 1,500 carved figures and the 2014 UNESCO listing and the 1960s excavation; the stepwell's history of the 2001-era restoration and the flooded-to-excavated story, gives Rani ki Vav its stepwell character.
