Rangdum lies in the Kargil district of Ladakh at about 3,657 m, 140 km from Kargil and 300 km from Leh — the meadow valley of the region, its 18th-century monastery, the stargazing and the Suru river set on the Zanskar's south edge.

The valley's story runs with the 18th-century monastery era — the meadow valley of the Rangdum gompa and the 18th-century-era seat of the Gelug order, with the valley's modern role as the offbeat stop of the Ladakh circuit and the home of the 18th-century-era monastery and the Suru river camps and the stargazing nights; the valley's history of the Pensi La's pass and the 1970s road era and the summer pasture life, gives Rangdum its meadow character.
