Ralong lies in the South Sikkim district of Sikkim at about 2,000 m, 40 km from Ravangla and 80 km from Gangtok — the monastery valley of the region, its 18th-century gompa, the views and the quiet set on the Tashiding ridge.

The village's story runs with the 18th-century monastery era — the monastery village of the 18th-century Ralong gompa and the seat of the Karma Kagyu order, with the village's modern role as the pilgrimage stop of the Sikkim circuit and the home of the 18th-century-era gompa and the annual Chaam dance and the Tashiding views; the village's history of the 1976 restoration and the tantric murals, gives Ralong its monastery character.
