The fort's story runs with the 1656 Maratha era — the capital fort of the 1656 founding and the coronation seat of the 1674, with the fort's modern role as the heritage stop of the Maharashtra circuit and the home of the 1674 coronation platform and the 1664-era gates and the 2016 ropeway; the fort's history of the 1689 fall and the 1818 British-era decline and the Ganga Sagar tank, gives Raigad its capital-fort character.
