Pulicat Lake spreads 460 sq km across the Andhra–Tamil Nadu border north of Chennai, its Andhra shore belonging to SPS Nellore district — a shallow brackish lagoon sealed from the Bay of Bengal by Sriharikota's sand spit, with the flamingo flats running along the mainland edge near Sullurpeta.
History & culture
The lagoon's Andhra side was long the quieter flank of a trading coast — the Dutch, then the British, worked this waterline in the 1600s from their factory settlements, while the islands inside the lagoon carried fishing villages and grazed buffalo; today Sriharikota across the water hosts India's spaceport, giving the old lagoon a new modern horizon.
