Pulicat Lake stretches across the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border north of Chennai — a 460-sq-km shallow lagoon separated from the Bay of Bengal by Sriharikota's sand spit, with the old port town of Pulicat on its southern shore and the flamingo flats running far into the middle water.
History & culture
The lagoon was once one of the subcontinent's great trading harbours — the Dutch East India Company made Pulicat their Coromandel headquarters in the early 1600s, building the fort, the settlement and the cemetery whose old graves still stand above the water; after the Dutch passed, the lagoon slipped into fishing-town quiet, and the Sriharikota island became the modern rocket-launch base just beyond the spit.
