Pithoragarh lies in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand at about 1,650 m, 270 km from Kathgodam and 380 km from Delhi — the border town of the region, its fort, the Himalayan views and the offbeat calm set on the Kali river's valley.

The town's story runs with the 15th-century fort era — the town of the Pithoragarh fort and the Chand kings' seat of the 15th century, with the town's modern role as the border stop of the Uttarakhand circuit and the home of the 15th-century-era fort and the Chhota Kailash views and the Tibetan market; the town's history of the 1962 border life and the Ralam valley treks, gives Pithoragarh its border-town character.
