Pilak lies in the South Tripura district of Tripura, 130 km from Agartala and 30 km from Belonia — the Buddhist site of the region, its 8th-century sculptures, the stupas and the red-stone panels set on the Tripura's south hills.
History & culture
The site's story runs with the 8th-century Buddhist era — the temple complex of the 8th to 12th centuries and the Bengal style of the stone panels, with the site's modern role as the heritage stop of the Tripura circuit and the home of the 11th-century Chaturmukha sculpture and the terracotta plaques and the stupa ruins; the site's history of the 2000-era excavation and the ASI protection, gives Pilak its Buddhist character.
