Pawapuri lies on the Bihar plain, 20 km from Rajgir and 90 km from Patna — the small lake-town of the Jain pilgrimage, its great white marble temple floating on the water of a lotus lake where Mahavira's last teachings and cremation mark the sacred site of the Tirthankara's passing.
History & culture
Jain tradition marks Pawapuri as the place where Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, attained moksha in 527 BCE; the temple on the lake replaces the cremation site, and the Jal Mandir's white marble now stands in the water that the devoted still trace by boat and by bridge.
