Pauri lies in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand at about 1,650 m, 160 km from Rishikesh and 200 km from Dehradun — the Kandoliya town of the region, its Himalayan views, the offbeat quiet and the forts set on the Garhwal's ridge.

The town's story runs with the Garhwal kingdom era — the district seat of the Garhwal hills and the 19th-century british-era administrative town, with the town's modern role as the offbeat stop of the Uttarakhand circuit and the home of the Kandoliya festival and the 1860-era Kyunkaleshwar temple; the town's history of the Kandoliya devta legend and the views of the Nanda Devi, gives Pauri its ridge character.
