Papikondalu — the Papi hills — is the green gorge where the Godavari cuts through the Eastern Ghats between Rajahmundry and Bhadrachalam, a 60-km winding river road of forested ridges, sandbanks and tribal villages passed only by boat, with Vanagam? — the 'turtle island' and the densely wooded banks lending the cruise its fame.
History & culture
The gorge's hills sheltered forest tribes and ferried the region's timber and toddy for centuries; the Andhra Pradesh Tourism boats turned the river itself into the region's top cruise route in the 1980s, and the bamboo-fringed banks now carry the names — Turtle Rock, Eagle Rapids — of the run's legends.
