The town's story runs with the Jain pilgrimage tradition — the Shatrunjaya hill of the 863 marble temples (the first pilgrimage of the Jains) and the 3,500 steps of the climb, with the town's modern role as the pilgrimage of the Gujarat circuit and the home of the 16th-century Chaumukh temple and the Adishwar temples; the town's history of the 1300-year temple building and the night-halt rule of the hill, gives Palitana its temple-hill character.
