History & culture
The town's story runs with the 1849 tea era — the town of the colonial-era tea gardens (the tea estate of the 1852) and the first tea of the region, with the town's modern role as the tea-and-quiet stop of the Kangra circuit and the home of the Neugal Khad and the 1850s tea factory; the town's history of the Tibetan refugees' settlement and the Baijnath temple (804) and the valley's rice terraces, gives Palampur its tea-town character.
