History & culture

The town's story runs with the jyotirlinga tradition — one of the 12 jyotirlingas of the Shiva and the om-shaped island of the Narmada (the Mamaleshwar of the legend), with the town's modern role as the pilgrimage of the Narmada circuit and the home of the 12th-century temple and the Satmatrika hill; the town's history of the Parashuram legends and the Adi Shankaracharya's visit, gives Omkareshwar its island-jyotirlinga character.
