Nandi Hills lie in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka at about 1,478 m, 60 km from Bangalore and 25 km from Chikkaballapur — the sunrise fort of the region, its tipu fort, the views and the weekend crowds set on the hill's flat top.
History & culture
The hill's story runs with the Ganga-era fortification — the hill fort of the Chola and the Tipu Sultan eras and the British-era summer retreat of the 1860s, with the hill's modern role as the sunrise stop of the Bangalore circuit and the home of the Amrita Sarovar and the Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple; the hill's history of the 1791 Tipu-era walls and the yoga and the meditation halls, gives the hill its sunrise-fort character.

The drive is still dark when you start the final climb, and then the summit bursts open — a white ocean of cloud filling every valley below, with hilltops floating like islands. The air is sharp and cold, and the first sound you register is silence, broken only by the wind and an occasional temple bell. As the sun comes up, the white sea turns pink, then gold, and the city you left behind is nowhere to be seen. People around you speak in low voices, as if at a ceremony.
