Namsai is the district town of the upper Lohit plain, 70 km beyond Tinsukia on the road toward Tezu — the heart of Tai-Khamti country, its streets green and gold with the famous Golden Pagoda rising from the paddy flats at the town's edge.

The Tai-Khamti and Tai-Phake peoples have held this river plain for centuries, their Buddhist monasteries and script living quietly through the colonial and post-colonial years; the modern Golden Pagoda (Kongmu Kham), built in the 2010s, turned a little-known Buddhist enclave into the state's most photographed monument — and anchors the district's new identity since its 2015 creation.
