Geography & terrain

Munsiyari lies in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand at about 2,200 m, 140 km from Pithoragarh and 560 km from Delhi — the trek town of the region, its Panchachuli views, the villages and the gorges set on the Johar valley.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the Himalayan trade era — the town of the Johar valley's wool and the salt trade with the Tibet, with the town's modern role as the trek base of the Kumaon circuit and the home of the Milam and the Ralam glaciers' trails; the town's history of the Shauka traders and the colonial-era surveys and the 1962 border shifts, gives Munsiyari its trek-town character.
