Megamalai lies in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu at about 1,600 m, 40 km from Cumbum and 300 km from Chennai — the cloud-forest plateau of the region, its tea estates, the wildlife and the viewpoints set on the Western Ghats' high country.

The plateau's story runs with the colonial-era tea planting — the high forest of the Meghamalai region and the tea estates of the British era, with the plateau's modern role as the wildlife-and-views stop of the Theni circuit and the home of the Meghamalai wildlife sanctuary; the plateau's history of the cardamom and the coffee and the cloud forests, gives Megamalai its cloud-forest character.
