Mechuka Valley spreads its high pastures and river bend at about 1,830 m in Shi-Yomi district, 110 km from Along over the Geku climb — a lost valley of the Yargyap Chu river, yak camps and great meadows ringed by 2,000-m ridges, near the LAC-west frontier of the same mountain wall.
History & culture
The valley is historic Memba-Monpa country — its monasteries and the old India-Tibet trade route ran through it, the 18th-century Samten Yongcha monastery still stands at its head, and the border posts hold the memories of 1962; decades of restricted entry kept Mechuka's meadows and traditions sealed from tourism until the last years opened the valley to permitted travel.
