Geography & terrain
The Marine National Park of the Gulf of Kutch lies along the northern coast of the gulf off Jamnagar, Gujarat — India's first marine sanctuary (1980, park status 1982), a 458-sq-km arc of islands, coral reefs and intertidal flats between Pirotan and the mainland, reached by boat from the old port town of Narara.
History & culture
The park came into being to shield the gulf's corals and its marine life after decades of collection pressure; its islands — Pirotan, Narara, Ajad, Poshitra — hold trading-history layers (the old pearl and oyster banks of the gulf were worked for centuries), and today a regulated tide-table of low-tide walks and island visits opens the reef world to visitors.
