Majuli is the river island of the Brahmaputra — among the world's largest, 900 sq km of paddy, wetlands and village lanes in the Jorhat district, reached only by ferry from Nimati ghat, with the great river braiding around its ever-shifting shores.
History & culture
The island became the 16th-century heart of Assam's Vaishnavite reformation under Sankaradeva and Madhavdeva — its satras (monasteries) still run the island's cultural life; the mask-making of Samaguri, the handlooms and the manuscripts of Auniati make Majuli a living museum of Assamese faith and craft, even as the river steadily eats its banks.
