Geography & terrain
Mahanandi sits in a green hollow of the Nallamala hills, 15 km east of Nandyal in Kurnool district — a Shiva temple town whose stone shrine stands in a spring-fed basin, ringed by nine named ponds and the forested ridge of the hill country that folds around it.
History & culture
The temple, in its current form built under the Vijayanagara kings, worships Nandi in its stone-hewn chamber — a rare converse shrine where the bull leads — and the site's nine sacred pushkarinis over the spring made Mahanandi a pilgrimage focus for the Kurnool country across centuries, with the villagers' buffaloes still bathing in the same water.

Its Nandi shrine leads the worship — and nine spring-fed ponds ring the temple, keeping the basin green all year.
A temple plus a spring-fed sanctuary setting — ponds, ridge walks and village water-life make it a genuine small landscape.
Pilgrims pass in an hour; nature-goers linger half a day on the ponds and the ridge.
