Lothal lies in the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat, 80 km from Ahmedabad and 60 km from the Gulf of Khambhat — the Harappan port town of the region, its dock, the beads and the museum set on the plain's Bhogavo river.
History & culture
The town's story runs with the 2400–1900 BCE Harappan era — the dockyard city of the Indus-valley civilisation and the world's oldest known dock, with the town's modern role as the archaeology stop of the Gujarat circuit and the home of the bead-making and the seal collection; the town's history of the 1970s excavation and the citadel's layout, gives Lothal its Harappan character.
