The first sign you're there is the air: the expressway ends at the ghat edge and the temperature drops, the mist rolling over the valley like a slow tide. At Duke's Nose the drop is sheer and the whole Konkan plain shimmers far below, hazy and enormous. Bhushi Dam in monsoon is a festival of families under the sluices, the water cold and loud, and the main-road chikki shops fill the car with the smell of roasted peanuts before you've parked. Evenings at Tiger Point turn orange and gold over the hills, and the wind carries the smell of wet earth and woodsmoke. It's the weekend Mumbai has been taking for 150 years, and the recipe still works — simple, damp, and exactly far enough from home.
