Likir lies in the Leh district of Ladakh at about 3,500 m, 60 km from Leh and 15 km from Alchi — the monastery village of the region, its 143rd gompa, the 23-metre Buddha and the quiet valley set on the Indus's north bank.
History & culture
The village's story runs with the region's Gelugpa founding — the monastery of the 11th-century founded by the lama Lhachen Gyalpo and rebuilt in the 18th century, with the village's modern role as the quiet stop of the Alchi circuit and the home of the seated Buddha statue of 1999; the village's history of the monastery's fires and the restorations, gives Likir its monastery-village character.
