Geography & terrain
Leh sits at 3,500 m on the Indus valley floor of Ladakh — a high-altitude desert plateau ringed by the Zanskar and Ladakh ranges. The town's white-washed gompas and the Tsemo fort ridge rise straight out of the dry river valley.
History & culture
The 17th-century Namgyal kingdom's capital, on the ancient Silk Road between Tibet, Kashmir and Central Asia — the Leh Palace (1600s) and the great Hemis monastery preserve that era. Modern Leh was also a key point on the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways.

Fly (the smart first visit) or the 2-day Manali–Leh road crossing. Give yourself a full rest day on arrival.
May–September. Winter (Nov–Apr) is gorgeous but most roads and hotels close.
Indians no longer need the inner-line permit (scrapped in 2026) — pay the online Environment Fee on lahdclehpermit.in (₹400 + ₹20/day) and carry the receipt. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit via a registered agent.
The first breath of Leh air is the thing no one forgets: thin, cold, electric, and the light — a clarity that makes the mountains look hand-painted. The old town's alleys, the prayer wheels turning, the stupas white against the ochre hills, everything feels suspended at high altitude, slower and sharper at once. At Thiksey at sunrise, the chanting drifts down the hillside through the cold, and the view from the roof over the Indus valley is endless. Driving to Khardung La, the landscape empties into desert and sky, and the pass itself is a ceremony of wind and flags. Back in Leh, the bakeries and momo shops are warm and crowded, and the evening flight home climbs away from the strangest, most beautiful emptiness in India. It is the shortest long weekend in existence — and the most worth it.
