Geography & terrain

Lamayuru lies in the Kargil district of Ladakh at about 3,510 m, 125 km from Leh and 90 km from Kargil — the moonland monastery town of the region, its 11th-century gompa, the crater landscape and the cave hermits set on the Indus's western bend.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the region's Buddhist founding — the monastery of the 11th century (the oldest of the Ladakh's gompas of its kind) and the legend of the lake drained by the guru Naropa, with the town's modern role as the stop of the Srinagar–Leh circuit and the home of the 150 monks' traditions; the town's history of the moonland's crater and the hermits' caves, gives Lamayuru its moonland character.
