The site's story runs with the 1st–13th century Buddhist era — the hill of the Diamond Triangle's oldest stupa and the relics of the Buddha discovered in 1985, with the site's modern role as the pilgrimage and the archaeology stop of the region and the home of the restored mahastupa; the site's history of the vihara life and the brick architecture of the monks, gives Lalitagiri its Buddhist-hill character.
