Konark lies in the Puri district of Odisha on the coast, 65 km from Bhubaneswar and 35 km from Puri — the UNESCO heritage town of the region, its Sun Temple, the chariot carvings and the beach set on the sea's edge.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the 13th-century Ganga-dynasty building — the Sun Temple of Narasimhadeva I built as the colossal chariot of the sun god, with the town's temple of the seven horses and the 24 wheels carved in stone; the town's history of the abandoned worship and the sand's burying of the shrine, with the temple's UNESCO listing of 1984, gives Konark its sun-temple character.
