Kolanupaka lies in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, 70 km from Hyderabad and 15 km from Aler — the ancient Jain temple town of the region, its Ramappa-era shrine, the museum and the carvings set on the Deccan's quiet country.

The town's story runs with the 1st–2nd century Jain heritage — the old Jain capital of the Kalyani and the Chalukya eras, with the town's modern restoration of the Kolanupaka temple complex and the museum of the recovered idols; the town's history of the Jain pilgrimage of the region and the 108 pillar hall, gives Kolanupaka its Jain-town character.
