Khongjom lies in the Thoubal district of Manipur, 30 km from Imphal and 60 km from Moreh — the historic battlefield of the region, its war memorial, the Kheba Khongjom and the monument set on the plain near the Chindwin's road.

History & culture

The site's story runs with the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891 — the last stand of the Meitei warriors against the British at the Kheba Khongjom hill, with the site's memorial column of 1957 and the equestrian statue of Paona Brajabasi, the hero of the battle; the site's role in the state's memory and the modern memorials of the war's centenary, gives Khongjom its battlefield character.
