Khajuraho lies in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, 170 km from Jhansi and 500 km from Delhi — the UNESCO temple city of the Chandelas, its western group, the sculptures and the light shows set on the plateau's green country.
History & culture
The temples' story runs with the 10th–12th century Chandela dynasty — the group of 85 original temples (the 22 that survive) of the Nagara style, with the temples' famous sculpture of the erotica and the life of the era; the temples' rediscovery of the 19th century and the 1986 UNESCO recognition, with the western group's Kandariya Mahadeva, gives Khajuraho its temple-sculpture character.
