Key Monastery lies in the Spiti valley of the Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh at about 4,166 m, 14 km from Kaza and 210 km from Manali — the great gompa of the Spiti, its stacked walls, the prayer halls and the views set on the hill above the river.
History & culture
The monastery's story runs with the 11th-century founding of the Drikung Kagyu tradition — the largest gompa of the Spiti, with the monastery's history of the 1975 Chinese border war's damage and the repair and its collection of the murals and the manuscripts; the monastery's role in the region's Buddhist life, with its masked dances of the festivals and the library's old texts, gives Key its monastery-fort character.
